Sailing Naked.

Possibly one of the finest experience’s a person can have is to sail nude. There are several reasons for this. The first is that should one be in a position to sail un-clothed then the weather would have to be warm and sunny to make the prospect inviting, also if one is able to sail, then some wind will be making itself know and the vessel will be leaning to it . Even in colder climes when I have had to wear clothing to ward off the elements I never tire of the miracle that is a sailing vessel merely using the wind to drive through the sea. Sorry I digress, anyway another factor, ( unless one is a serious exhibitionist) is that there will not be a lot of other vessels around and for me an empty sea is a happy sea. If there are other people on board, then if one’s relationship to them will not be strained by sharing such an intimate experience, it might even be enhancing.

Sailing can be a physically demanding pastime, frequently one has to move fast, its not until one has had the pleasure of  moving without clothing does one realise how restricting garments are. When I was on my way (singlehanded) back across the Atlantic in my beaten up schooner “Gloria” the most efficient sail  was one that went by the name of “the fisherman’s” this four sided gem went at the top between the two masts and was astonishingly powerful in light airs. The drawback was that as soon as the wind piped up it had to come down. But in order to drop it two halliards (the ropes that pull up or lower a sail) had to be used at the same time, as there was only one of me and my invisible friend was proving useless at deck work, the sail would get the wind behind it and flap up and tear itself. I had grown very tired of this caper and the subsequent sewing up of rips that came of it. This one particular time it did it, the whole sail blew forward and wrapped itself around the foremast top, I knew that in a very short time it would be ripped beyond repair and I climbed the mast to free it. Wearing nothing but a suntan I was amazed how easy it was. It really was a revelation. How well this method would go down in Solent sailing  circles I don’t know, I daresay the RYA and health and safety would have something to say on the matter!

Another wonderful thing about only wearing ones skin is that it is an inescapable part of sailing that from time to time  a bit of the wet stuff will throw itself at you. If you are wearing clothes they will get wet, and as its sea water, the salt will then stop the clothing from ever properly drying until it is rinsed with fresh water. Fresh water can be very precious on a sailing boat far from land, it is not to be squandered in rinsing out clothing. So if one does not wear any, it does not get dirty and need washing does it? Along with all these wonderful benefits one gets a nice even tan, what could be better?

David Gault I must agreed with you on this Max. I love that moment when you turn the engine off, the sails fill and she drives forward silently. I also look forward to casting off from the shore and then casting off the clothes. Down here on the Med a surprising ...  more

Alex&Olga aka Candibober We are spending 7-10 days in the sea sailing nude every year since we did it for the first time four years ago... The freedom and unity with the sun and sea hard to express with words. One have to try it to understand the beauty and excitement.
